What is Emergent Literacy?
It is what children know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write.

What is so important about Emergent Literacy?
Research shows that children learn skills that get them ready to read years before they start school. You can teach your child important skills now that will help him be a good reader later.

What are the basic components of Emergent Literacy?

  • Print Motivation : Being interested in and enjoying books.
  • Vocabulary : Knowing the name of things.
  • Print Awareness : Noticing print, knowing how to handle a book, and knowing how to follow words on a page.
  • Narrative Skills : Being able to describe things and events and to tell stories.
  • Letter Knowledge : Knowing letters are different from each other, knowing their names and sounds, and recognizing letters everywhere.
  • Phonological Awareness : Being able to hear and play with the smaller sound in words.

What is the Library doing?
Provo City Library story tellers are all trained to incorporate the basic Emergent Literacy skills into each story time. They do this by

  • Encouraging print motivation by making books and stories fun.
  • Giving the children a name tag when they come to story time.
  • Highlighting a different letter each week.
  • Practicing Dialogic Reading, or asking open ended questions about what they are reading.
  • Modeling Narrative Skills.
  • Playing the Say it Fast, Say it Slow game, singing rhyming song, and reading rhyming books to teach Phonological Awareness.

The Provo City Library periodically offers classes about Emergent Literacy for parents and caregivers. The library staff also offers outreach Emergent Literacy classes to community or church groups. Alfabetización Temprana

¿Qué es Alfabetización Temprana?
Es lo que los niños saben sobre la lectura y escritura antes que realmente lean o escriban. Comienza en la infancia y va desarrollandose desde el lenguaje hablado y el sonido que va formando palabras, letras, escritura, y finalmente con el uso de los libros.

¿Cuál es la importancia de Alfabetización Temprana?
Es tan importante, que todos los estudios demuestran que las habilidades aprendidas desde la infancia determinan cuán preparados están los niños para entrar en la escuela va desde lo aprendido en el idioma hablado en casa y lo que se transfiere a otro idioma; consecuentemente los niños van a ser buenos lectores.

¿Cuáles son los componentes básicos de la Alfabetización Temprana?

  • Amor por los libros: que estén interesados en los libros y gocen de la lectura.
  • Vocabulario: es aprender el significado y la pronunciación de las palabras.
  • Habilidades narrativas: la habilidad de describir palabras y cuentos.
  • Conocimiento de las letras: fijarse de la palabra escrita, saber manipular el libro de izquierda a derecha y también reconocer y nombrar las letras del alfabeto.
  • Conocimiento fonético: reconocer y usar sonidos individuales y entender que las palabras están compuestas de elementos más pequeños.

¿Qué está haciendo la Biblioteca?

  1. La Biblioteca de Provo está dando clases de Alfabetización Temprana todos los meses, los primeros jueves de cada mes a las 7 de la noche, es para todos los padres o personas encargadas de niños que estén interesados en ayudar a sus niños a ser buenos lectores.
  2. Tenemos dos sesiones de cuentos: los lunes a las 7 p.m. y los viernes a las 10:30 a.m. Durante este tiempo enseñamos rimas, canciones, jueguitos pequeños, leemos un libro, tenemos dialogo con los niños acerca de los libros que leemos, de esta manera implementamos los componentes básicos de la Alfabetización Temprana.
